### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Number Race Dice Game (for numbers 1-6) includes six versions of the same basic game for differentiating instruction. Each page is 8.5”x11”. This game is a great way to teach and reinforce California Common Core Standards: K.CC.3 Write numbers 0-20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20; K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities, connect counting to cardinality; K.CC.5 Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration...; and K.CC.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

This is a wonderful, beginning-of-the-year activity. Students will learn to count dots (and eventually subitize) to understand quantity and (depending on which version you use and how you use it) get plenty of practice writing numbers 1-6. Students work individually, or can share one die (but mark their own paper). I suggest using larger foam dice (they are quiet) and highlighters for marking.

BASIC GAME: Student rolls die and determines number (or quantity). Then, starting at the bottom of the grid, student writes (or traces) the number rolled. Student repeats until star (for a particular number) is reached (trace star too) and that determines the winning number!

EXTEND GAME: Once one number wins using one color of highlighter, student changes to a new color and continues game with same paper to determine second-place number. Student can change again to determine third-place and so on. Note: It works best for me if I determine the color sequence (e.g., yellow for 1st number to win, blue for second, and orange for third). When game play is over, I can ask students to look at the column with the star colored yellow and create a classroom graph showing which number won first the most, the least, and if any numbers won the same number of times.

BONUS: Each version is in black and white and in color. I suggest using the colored pages to make file folder games. Glue to file folder, laminate, and use as write-on/wipe-off (with dry erase markers).
