Use these Number Sense Tune Ups to reinforce place value skills, critical thinking, and application with your students. Each page features a story problem, a representation section, and a number mystery section. They challenge students to apply knowledge of basic number sense to new situations, and emphasize showing work in an efficient, accurate way.
I created these to keep my students thinking, hold them accountable for working precisely, but most of all, to keep them engaged. Each of the 15 tune-ups has a different theme: ice cream, dinosaurs, Alice in Wonderland, Rapunzel, cowboys, and mining for jewels, just to name a few.
Common Core Standards Covered
• 1.NBT.2: This packet focuses on the different ways numbers are composed of tens and ones through word problems, ten frames, base 10 blocks, and expanded form equations.
• 1.NBT.3: Comparing numbers. This packet does not include the symbols (<,=,>) but instead challenges students to compare different representations of a number by circling the correct phrase. This deepens their understanding and will making using symbols more meaningful.
• 1.NBT.5: Students will practice 10 more/10 less in story problems as well as in isolation.
• 1.NBT.5: Students will practice subtracting multiples of 10 in story problems as well as in isolation.
