Looking for a fun, hands-on way to practice number recognition and number sense that your students are sure to love? This low prep, high engagement activity is the perfect way for your class to practice identifying and matching numerals, ten frames, and tally marks from 1-20 while getting some of those pre-Christmas break wiggles out!
To prep this activity, print the snowball cards out and cut each paper in half down the line. Ball up each half sheet of paper to make “snowballs” and spread the snowballs around the room.
When you give the signal, students will race to grab a snow ball and open it up. From that point on, there are two ways you can have your students play:
- Find a partner/group – If using all 3 (numeral, tally mark, and 10 frame snowballs) types of snowballs, students must find the other students that have the snowball with the same value as their snowball.
- Produce a number – Students must say the amount that is on their snowball.
After students have completed the task, they can divide into two groups, throw the snowballs, and continue the learning fun!
