What Are Number Strings?
Number strings are a very specific series of math problems designed to foster efficient strategies and conceptual understanding.
Number strings are an awesome way to:
-build conceptual understanding
-have meaningful conversations about math
-build student participation
-shift the instruction so you are more of a facilitator than lecturer
With this product: Use number strings to build the connection between a whole number like 1 or 3 & the different ways we could represent a whole number in fraction form. From there, build understanding of mixed numbers and improper fractions.
These concepts are the foundation for understanding fractions & performing operations with mixed numbers.
-18-minute video describing how to teach using number strings, including a step-by-step walk through of the first number string: expressing whole numbers as fractions
-5 number strings: covering converting whole number to fractions, fractions to whole numbers; mixed numbers to improper fractions and improper fractions to mixed numbers
Great way to introduce the topic & to review with older students!
