This is the rubric that I use to grade my students' Number Talks. In my Google Classroom, the students all have a semester-long project entitled the "Number Talk Journal," where each slide of the Google Slides presentation has a different number talk for the corresponding day. At the beginning of class, students are given a problem, such as 20 * 8, which they are asked to solve mentally, and without using an algorithm. Then, they must explain and justify two approaches to solving the problem, and provide a visual representation of either of the approaches. I am currently using this project in my Honors Algebra 1 course for 8th grade students, but it could certainly be modified for all grade levels. This project was inspired by Jo Boaler's "Mathematical Mindsets," and by the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice.
