What is Subitizing? Subitizing is the ability to immediately recognize the number of a small group of objects without having to count them. The ability to subitize is an essential skill in the development of number sense as children need to be able to relate numbers to actual groups of items.
You will be helping students develop “conceptual subitizing”. Students must recognize that a whole quantity is made up of smaller quantities (part-part-whole) and those numbers can be added together to create the whole. Students will use different mental strategies to come up with the “whole number”. Be sure to ask your students how they figured it out. Some students group them differently.
