A great way to introduce your students to number talks, or use during morning meeting, as bell ringers, or during math workshop. Students develop number sense strategies by using the riddles and illustrations found in the math mentor texts The Grapes of Math and Math for All Seasons, by Greg Tang. Project a particular riddle onto the board. (The Grapes of Math is also available on you tube.) Then have students determine possible ways to solve the riddle. Included here are pages for students to use to record their thinking. One page goes with each riddle contained in the texts. Each page includes space to record TWO different ways to determine each solution. Also note: The author includes one possible solution to each riddle in the back of each book.
Also included is a list of the riddles sorted by strategy, in case you would want to follow a certain pattern or number strategy before moving on to another. Strategies move students away from counting by one or adding one more, and include regrouping, adding, and multiplication; finding compatible numbers; and adding then taking away.
