This number zoo was created to teach standard:
2.NBT.A.2 Understand Place Value Count within 1000
I currently teach second grade and I use this activity in guided math. I also use it if an activity is needed in math for a substitute teacher.
The students are very engaged during this activity, they love trying to find out which animal they will create. For the first two pages I go over the directions in detail and review the number zoo instructions anchor chart. After the first two pages are done whole group it becomes an independent activity. After those two activities the students can usually handle the process on their own.
This activity includes;
1. Number Zoo Instructions Anchor Chart
2. Two different sets of number grids; 10 pages in each set.
-One is blank for the students to fill in the numbers and then color.
-The other has all the numbers filled in.
I use these for tier II students who need a little more support.
I print the page with the numbers so they can use it to copy the numbers onto the grid. Or if you would like a quicker morning work activity for number recognition you can use them for that as well.
3. Answer Sheets
-After most students have filled in the numbers and are started on the coloring portion of the activity I hang up the answer sheet so they have a reference sheet to guide them.
