What educators are saying
I used this resource with small groups of third and fourth math students. it promoted critical thinking and became quite a competition to see who could figure it out first.
Love, love, love this resource. I worked in lower grades before and used the smaller numbers version and loved how it built number sense for my students.
Description
This product is a higher-level version of my popular "Number of the Week" resource. This version uses 5 and 6 digit numbers and reinforces skills appropriate for grades 4 and up.
This product is designed to develop number sense and sharpen problem solving skills through consistent, spiraled practice with concepts we don't always have time to review in our regular math block. The Common Core really emphasizes strong number sense and the ability to work flexibly with numbers--this product is designed to reinforce those skills!
I have not included fractions and decimals in this resource because I believe students, even in the upper elementary grades, still need consistent practice with place value concepts to the left of the decimal point. This resource will help solidify the foundational skills that are so important to a student's understanding of all levels of math throughout the school career.
This pack includes Number of the Week materials for 24 weeks of school. This product is a great addition to your daily math routine and can be utilized in a variety of ways:
•morning/bell work
•do now/spiral review at the beginning of math each day
•math centers
•daily/weekly homework
•as printed packets, or laminated/placed in page protectors for reuse

TABLE OF CONTENTS:
p. 3: Teacher Information
p. 4: Teacher Answer Key
p. 5-16: Clue Posters: Weeks 1-12 (5-digit numbers)
p. 17-28: Clue Posters: Weeks 13-24 (6-digit numbers)
p.29: Clue Poster (blank)
p.30-34: Number of the Week Worksheets (Days 1-5)
p. 35: Day 4 Alternate Version (without powers of 10 for younger students)
BONUS: Editable PowerPoint version of the blank number of the week clue poster. This allows you to type your own clues for new numbers.
Each week begins with a Number of the Week clue poster. The poster provides clues for students to determine the number of the week. There are multiple ways to use the posters:
•post on the board
•display on a document camera/overhead for students to complete in their math notebooks
•attach a copy to the front of each student’s Number of the Week packet
After figuring out the number of the week, students will use the number to complete 5 days worth of number sense activities. The Day 1-5 pages are the same for each number so that students can gain confidence while reinforcing crucial math skills.
The daily activity pages are blank, so you can use your own numbers as well!
A great extension would be to have a student generate clues for the Number of the Week poster each week. The included blank poster makes that easy to do!
