Students respond to literature through written expression, developing writing fluency by completing compositions based on the following topics: bravery, friendship, and fear. These three writing assignments are introduced after students have read through Chapter 8, so they are able to connect their writing to the text. They are assigned as either classwork, homework, or as an assessment, and assigned topics are timed appropriately throughout the novel, according to student needs and abilities.
The writing assignments were formatted to mirror an open-ended question students will be expected to answer on the end-of-the-year state assessment, which makes these writing assignments a perfect test prep opportunity.
A mini-lesson, or review of writing expectations, is always provided before assigning the compositions, so students are aware of expectations, criteria, and the rubric used for scoring. These assignments might also be considered for reading response journals and/or readers/writers workshop assignments.
