This PowerPoint presentation defines symbolism, gives examples of popular symbols of today, and then an explanation of symbolism found in Lois Lowry's Number the Stars. Symbols examined include those of settings, Judaism, rationing, protection, and Nazi Germany. Also included are photographs of Adolph Hitler, and a slide showing students what Danish currency looks like. We sometimes use this PowerPoint as a pre-reading activity to help students visualize important concepts, but most times as a post-reading activity to summarize what's been read, and to discuss the symbolism of story events, places and things found in the story. Another suggestion would be to view specific slides of the presentation during reading, stopping to use the slides to spark discussion or explain symbolic events.
