This unit is formulated to follow CCSS. It is paced for a double block of literature (one focused on a novel study and the other on non-fiction), but could be easily adapted to fit smaller blocks. There are multi-media formats in many of the lessons, with links on the "resources" page.
This unit makes use of notice and note signposts as well as the RACER format of short answer questions.
There is a heavy emphasis on supporting ideas with use of specific details from the text. In addition, there is a heavy emphasis on nonfiction texts.
There are 19 days of materials, but again, each is formulated for a double block so this could easily be extended.
The unit starts with in class reading but scaffolds to at home, independent reading.
Some of the major skills tackled in this unit are: Main/central idea, theme, citing evidence, writing short answer responses with at least two pieces of evidence, Elements of plot, and author's purpose.
