Number the Stars is the beautiful story of Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen, best friends, living in Denmark during the Nazi occupation. When the Nazis begin rounding up the Jewish citizens of Copenhagen, Annemarie and her family have to act with courage and bravery in order to keep Ellen's family safe from the Nazis. Annemarie learns the true meaning of courage when she is forced to run through the woods as part of a Resistance scheme to get Ellen and her family to Sweden, and she learns that while Ellen and her family could not take everything with them to safety, they would be taking their pride.
As close reading is such an important part of the Common Core, students need to be taught to be analytic as they read texts. This unit includes close reading sections, chapter-by-chapter vocabulary, a chapter-by-chapter summary, and discussion questions (for each chapter). I have used this unit with gifted grade three all the way through grade 7. I have used this unit in special education as well as regular education classrooms, and it has been successful across the board. It includes everything you need:
Ideas for encouraging your readers to be close readers
Questions to ask as you explore the novel
Guided reading questions
Pre-reading writing assignment
Nonfiction reading passage and questions
Chapter-by-chapter questions (main idea, detail, vocabulary, inference)
Two research activities
