This is a no frills comprehensive Novel Study. This was created and used in my fifth grade class. This novel study comes with an answer sheet for every chapter. On several occasions, I felt the chapter was too long so I have TWO answer sheets for those chapters. Each answer sheet addresses three to four vocabulary questions from the section as well as the page number to find it, literary questions that pertain to the events of the story, inferential questions to challenge students' thinking and comprehension, and also opinion questions.
The way that I used these is that students would read the chapter and answer the questions, either independently or in pairs. The next day, we would reread aloud, discuss, and go over the answer sheet. This way, even struggling readers are scaffolded for success.
My kids loved these books and did excellent with the question format. They really got used to the set up and I was very happy with their performance and growth.
This unit also comes with a vocabulary and comprehension test. I've also included a powerpoint that addresses questions the students may have such as: what the star of david looks like, where Denmark is, and what was the symbol for the Nazis. All in all, I don't have cute clipart, creative borders, or pleasing graphic organizers. I do, however, have high expectations for my students and these questions facilitate such standards.
