What educators are saying

I love how versatile this resource is, it really helped my students understand word problems better and build stronger skills to solve them. A great purchase!
I love the learning progression with these numberless word problems and how the lack of numbers at the beginning makes the learners really slow down and understand the problem. Excellent resource!

Description

Numberless word problems are an excellent way to get your students thinking about WHAT the math word problem is asking and developing strategies for problem solving. Using these kinds of word problems in your class provides scaffolding that allows students the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the structure of word problems and how to make a plan to solve them.

Each “problem set” in this multiplying and dividing numbers resource contains 4 pages. The first page has the problem written without any numbers. Students are asked what they know and what they need to know. They then try to “solve” the problem by deciding what operation they should use and substituting reasonable numbers into the equation.

The second page gives a little more information about the problem – usually giving one number for the equation. Students are asked what changed about the problem, and then solve the problem again, substituting a reasonable number for the unknown.

The third page includes everything the student needs to know to solve the problem. Students solve the problem and explain their solution.

A fourth (and optional) page contains challenge questions related to the original problem. These “challenge questions” contain concepts in addition to the learning goal, so they are perfect for enrichment or review.

There are 10 different problem sets in this resource, including numbers from the hundreds to millions.

Included in this resource:

  • 40 pages of problems (3 scaffolded problems per set plus one challenge page)
  • Answer Key
  • Problem solving templates
  • Challenge Question Template
  • Learning Goal and Success Criteria
  • Rubric
  • Self-Reflection
  • Peer and Teacher Feedback Form
