Description

This beach themed sorting activity is perfect for teaching number sense 0-20 in preschool, kindergarten, and the beginning of first grade. The beach theme works well for the end of the school year, summer school, or the beginning of the school year. This resource includes half-page size color, less color, and black/ white sand pail number mats with the numbers 0-20 along with alternate one-fourth page size sand pail headers in color or black/ white. It also includes color and black/ white shell, starfish, and crab cards (9 per page) showing the numbers 0-20 represented in 11 ways- number words (0-20), fingers (0-10), quantities (0-10), dice (1-12), dominoes (0-18), ten frames (0-20), base ten blocks (1-20), tally marks (1-20), coins (1-20), ten and _ more (10-20), and 10 + _ (10-20). These cards are organized by the different representations and not by number. There are two optional recording sheets. One is to be used with numbers 1-10 and the other with numbers 11-20. You select the range of numbers and the representations to meet your students’ instructional needs. This number sense activity is ideal for either resource or intervention groups or as an independent math station. This is not a cut and paste activity.

Less color, no background, and one-fourth page size sand pail options were added to this resource, along with a complete cosmetic makeover on May 15, 2019.

This resource was crafted by Judy, a teacher with a master’s degree and more than 35 years of teaching experience.

Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
