Book One of the Sue Series books for children, parents, carers and teachers, is based on the simple yet fun process that I used at home with my very young sons, and is made up of (3) three separate learning phases taught through (3) three separate steps in one printable file for the adult teaching a child to use in this easy to follow step-by-step process which will leave a child confident, capable and prepared, when calling ‘000’ (Triple Zero) and dealing with an emergency.

Each child will not only learn about how to deal with an emergency, but also enjoy the closeness which comes from: having a story read to the child, the interactivity which comes from having the story and vital details discussed, using these printable files to help to enhance the learning-to-read and decision-making process, and with reinforcing what has been learnt through repetition and revision, and easy to follow stages which combine to help develop a more confident, prepared and happy child.

Story Time:

What will Sue do when her mum slips and falls in the garden? Does she know the important things about what to do and why?

When Sue's adventure has been read, the children have listened to a story at their level which: Introduces them to the book topic through the character Sue and her story of what being brave, smart and strong really means as she deals with an emergency situation; helps children to become familiar with the simple lessons found in the book and demonstrates and teaches them (in a fun and simple way) the basic steps needed to recognise and deal with an emergency; and helps them to learn the importance of knowing that they really can be ‘BIG’ and save a life – even though they are small!

Here are the basic steps for taking action, to teach the children you are reading Sue’s story to, and for helping them to become familiar with the vital lessons found in the story. Children will learn about the importance of knowing when and how to correctly call the numbers: 0-0-0 and how to be brave, smart and strong – just like Sue does in the story!

Teaching Guide: Corresponding with Story Time is the Teaching Guide with preparation guidelines to follow so the person teaching the children (or child) knows and understands what they teach – a guide full of detailed information to teach and help prepare children prior to completing the vital practical exercises and play-acting found in the back of the guide – so, everyone understands the importance of knowing what action to take, and why.

Included in the Teaching Guide are instructions for the practical exercises and play-acting which, when practiced regularly, enables children to really deal with an emergency, automatically and confidently; and leaves you, (the parent, carer or teacher), a lot more at ease. Follow the preparation guidelines and instructions to teach the children and know what to do as you teach, then work through the practical exercises and play-acting to reinforce what is taught from each of the (3) three steps.

Know that the children in your care can really deal with making a call for help, by using the check lists found at the back of the book to check off each step they should remember and so you are certain that each child is able to correctly use the numbers: 0-0-0 (zero-zero-zero).

Learning Activities:

Using the Learning Activities is a simple and fun way to further reinforce what has already been learnt from the corresponding Story Time phase and steps taught in the Teaching Guide.

Use these fun curriculum friendly activity sheets to help children to remember how to recognise an emergency; who the people are that will help them; how to recognise a ‘zero’; how many ‘zeros’ they need to press; how many ‘three’ (3) is; their name, address and phone number; what it really means for children to be brave, smart and strong; and what it means to be ‘BIG’.

Now you can help a child to remember what the child knows about how to recognise an emergency situation and the three important questions the child needs to answer – so he or she knows whether they need to take action and get help (using the special numbers: 0-0-0).

Select individual pages to meet different learning needs by choosing what area to work on, i.e.: a child can work with shapes and colours while he or she learns about the roles of special people in our communities.

Print, laminate and use as durable worksheets with wipe-able markers for a class or individual child.

The purpose of the Sue Series books is to successfully teach young children to be aware and take action in an emergency, instead of being helpless or the victim; and by reading the story, discussing the important information, practising the practical exercises and play-acting, and completing the activity sheets and check lists know that they really can achieve these things.

When this process is completed, present each child with his or her very own personalised 'Brave Smart and Strong Award', (included in the Learning Activities section) as a reminder of the child's achievements at learning how to be 'BIG'.

Each of these vital steps go hand-in-hand – one will not work without the other.

The number to call for emergencies in each area is referred to throughout the corresponding book.
