The Sue Series - Book One: Numbers to Know - How to Teach Children to Deal with Emergencies

Book One of the Sue Series books for children, parents and carers (based on the simple yet fun process I used at home with my very young sons) introduces the character Sue and her story of what being BRAVE, SMART and STRONG really means as she deals with an emergency situation and helps young children learn the importance of knowing that they REALLY can be ‘BIG’ and save a life even though they are small, through:
• Story Time - Sue’s exciting adventure is told through 12 pages of rhyming couplets and colour illustrations young children can relate to. These pages introduce the topic as each child waits to see what happens next and teaches them at a very young age where to go, what to do and what to say when faced with a difficult situation, while enhancing the learning-to-read process - (print and laminate these 12 pages to use as story cards).
• Preparation Guidelines - vital information for helping adults teach and help prepare very young children to know how to identify and deal with an emergency and to understand the reasons why they must do so and which allows for discussions about the reason why we ALL need to learn from the important lessons found in each of the Sue Series book.
Book One teaches children the role of the Emergency Services workers (including the Operator) and includes scenarios to help teach children to know how to identify what is or is not an emergency situation. There are instructions for teaching children how to use a phone correctly and how to identify and remember the correct numbers; and tips for helping children remember their address and phone number and for helping build inner strength. Children also learn how to recognise the signs that someone is in need of urgent help and about having ‘permission’ to make decisions when they are alone.
• Practical Exercises - necessary step-by-step guidelines for teaching children what they need to know so they are able to take the physical steps for REALLY taking action and for reinforcing what has been taught so that they are REALLY able to identify and deal with an emergency situation easily, confidently and automatically (and action and understand what they have already been taught from the book).
• Play-acting - crucial role-playing steps (to use in a drama lesson or monthly safety drill at home or at school) to help children take action and stay calm in an emergency situation and allowing a parent, carer or teacher to know if a child can REALLY take action and understand what they have been taught throughout the book.
• Worksheets - 30 pages of fun activities to reinforce what each child has been taught about how to deal with an emergency: the 000 number to call; the child’s name, address and phone number; knowing how and why they must take action; and what it means to be BRAVE, SMART and STRONG and how they can be ‘BIG’ even though they are small, through: letters and numbers; spelling and vocabulary; shapes and colours; writing and drawing; sorting and matching tasks; (and includes a separate check list to display for children to refer to). Select individual pages to meet different learning needs; select and laminate individual pages to display as reminder posters; use selected pages as flash cards; print worksheets for an individual child or for a whole class - (laminate the worksheets so that kids can use erasable markers and re-use the sheets).
• Check List - 10 detailed checking points for the person teaching the children the steps to be certain each child knows exactly what action to take and so they are confident knowing each child can remember and follow through each step and take action quickly and effectively and the child feels safe and is happy.
• Award - present children with a personalised, laminated award (included) when you know that all of the above comes easily to them.
