Nursery Rhyme Activities: Word Work - Set 1 (SASSOON)

Some suggested activities:

Sight Words plus Flashcards
Know and apply grade level phonics in decoding words.
• Play a game called, “Minute to win it!” Ask the child to read as many cards as he/she can in one minute. Count how many cards he/she has correctly read. Try to beat your own score the next time. What might you have to learn to accomplish that?
• Print two copies of each card. Play concentration. Place cards face down. If you can match two cards keep playing. If you turn up two cards that do not match turn them down again. The next player tries. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
Re-build the rhyme: in a pocket chart, on the table/floor; with stick-tac; while students hold the cards and re-arrange their positions.

Elkonin Boxes
• Match the word configuration or outline to the box.
• Note: The units of sound have been underlined and /or bolded. Tell the child that the boxes have been divided with a dotted line if they are used for a unit of sound…two or more letters that make one sound. (digraph)
• Letters that are not voiced have been printed in gray.

Word Search
• Use the words at the bottom of the page. Find the words printed horizontally left to right, or vertically from top to bottom. The first word search has blanked out spaces to help the child find the words.

Reading Expectations
There are numerous and varied learning opportunities that arise from student interactions and responses to books and stories. The READING EXPECTATIONS - (English Language Arts Standards) have been provided as suggested learning outcomes and skills that may be taught, reviewed and applied during classroom lessons and discussions.
