Nursery Rhyme Time!
Nursery Rhymes are unique to each culture in that they reflect some aspects of the culture that they are coming from. Teach your little learners the nursery rhyme Frère Jacques in three different languages: Haitian Creole, English and French. Frère Jacques is a nursery rhyme of French origin. It is about a friar who oversleeps and needs to wake up to sound the bells for the early morning prayers. In this resource, introduce your little learners to Tonton Bouki. In this Haitian version of Frère Jacques, Tonton Bouki has overslept and needs to wake up to beat the drums. Tonton Bouki or “Uncle Bouki” is a beloved character from Haitian oral storytelling tradition. Tonton Bouki does not have a lot of common sense and can be easily fooled or tricked into doing different things.
