Within the context of a human biology or anatomy course, this assignment is a great introduction to get students focused on their own eating habits and the link to health. It can easily be adapted to younger or older students.
Students begin by calculating their daily energy needs using a fairly simple set of formulae. They then record their food/beverage consumption for one 24 hour period.
Using available tools online (best option) or those that can be found in many textbooks, students then figure out their daily consumption of protein, carbohydrates and fat (in grams) in order to determine their daily caloric consumption.
Finally, students assess their daily diet both quantitatively (total calories, energy balance) and qualitatively (by referring to Canada's Food Guide) in order to propose changes that need to be made to improve their nutrition.
