The Nutrition Literacy and Math theme has been created to assist you in meeting your common core curriculum outcomes.

The unit consists of:

Two emergent readers (one professionally illustrated) offered in both color and blank and white. These readers introduce key reading concepts and strategies, beginning letter sounds and common sight words that can be used for shared and guided reading.

Literacy Centers
➢ “Cruising Around the Food Pyramid”, in this game a player rolls a die and moves that many spaces around the food pyramid. They must identify and match the letter they landed on.
➢ “Initial Consonant Food Game” players draw a food card and determine the initial letter sound heard, print or mark off the correct letter on the sheets provided.
➢ “Roll A Rhyme Food Game”, players roll a die and move around the food track and must determine which picture rhymes with the one landed on
➢ “Spin A Sight Word Game” players would spin a top, say or print the sight word that they landed on.
➢ Food picture cards both in color, black and white for each food group is provided for the students to sort.

Math
The focus in this theme is on the outcomes outlined below related to the Common Core Standards Outcomes.

Counting and Cardinality
➢ I can write numbers 0-20 and show the correct amount of objects for these numbers.
K.CC.A.3
➢ I can count 20 things. K.CC.B.5
➢ I know a number represents an amount of objects for these numbers. K.CC.A.3
➢ When I count, I know each number I say represents one object. K.CC.B.4aa
➢ I know the last number I say is the number of objects, even if I arrange them differently. KCC.B.4b
➢ I can tell if a group has greater than, less than or an equal amount. K.CC.B.6

Measurement, Data and Geometry
➢ I can tell what the height, width and weight of an object is. K.MD.A.1
➢ I can compare the length, width and weight of two objects and explain the difference. K.MD.A.2
➢ I can sort objects into categories. K.MD.B.3
➢ I can tell you the position of an object using words like above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. K.G.A.1

Crafts
Plenty of ideas and templates for crafts.

This theme is meant to be used for a two week time period and is based on a balanced literacy philosophy.
