Use with my fun Healthy Food Cards games! Students beg to play! Follow up with my FREE short answer Nutrition quiz.
A basic overview of nutrients and the evolution of the USDA's Food Pyramid/MyPlate.
Start by discussing each step in the evolution of the current USDA graphic, MyPlate. Ask students to volunteer characteristics they think are useful/pleasing about each graphic and characteristics they think could be improved.
Example: The Food Wheel has 3 categories of fruits and vegetables-great for avoiding 5 daily servings of our most popular vegetable, the potato. However, it also includes a category for butter and margarine. Could it be that, in that time period, people did not have as many sources of vitamin A as we do now? Evaluate and Discuss!
The next slides are an overview of the six nutrients the body needs. Students love to hear about the 2005 low-carb craze when fast food restaurants were serving burgers wrapped in lettuce leaves!
I hope you find this useful!
