This activity was inspired by American Heart Month celebrated in February and National Nutrition Month in March. It is never too early to teach children about how their hearts benefit from a good diet and lots of exercise!
Pgs 3-6: Activity includes 24 fruit and veggie cards. Playing cards contain two or three steps. Students must perform a naming task and then carry out a physical direction (action).
Read the card slowly, remind your student to 1-use whole body listening, 2-reauditorize and visualize the directions, and 3-repeat the directions aloud before carrying out the task.
Pg 7-8: 12 blank fruit and veggie cards to use with the grocery and/or sorting game.
Other ideas: Make additional copies and use cards as a memory game or for “Go Fish”
Pg 9: “I’m going grocery shopping for...” game mat. Place all cards face down on the shopping cart. Players take turns picking cards and using the phrase “I’m going grocery shopping for...” add on names of fruits/veggies in the correct sequence and continue game
until someone forgets which item comes next.
Pg 10: Also included is a grocery bags mat to sort fruits and vegetables into the correct category.
Pg 11: Blank bags mat is included to create other categories for sorting by color, size, shape, etc.
Pg 12: Collectible “speechsnacks” recipe card for Heart Healthy Hummus included.
