READY TO USE LESSON PLAN

This is a second lesson (#2 of 3 that I have posted) to Whitman's "O Captain! My Captain!" which challenges students to analyze how Whitman uses the literary technique/writing strategy of repetition in order to convey the central ideas in the poem.
This text is a CCLS recommended text, and the questions are aligned to Common Core Standards. I have found this lesson to be very effective, as I've used it many times in my 11th grade classroom. The lesson, which can be used as is by teachers or modified to fit their purposes, consists of an Aim, Do Now, Preview of Pertinent Vocabulary, a Reading Period, a Work Period consisting of rigorous, higher-order, text-dependent questions, an Exit Question, and a Homework assignment-- all of which are aligned to the lesson's Aim.

This product also includes a ready-to-use copy of the poem, which contains footnotes consisting of definitions of rigorous vocabulary words. This will provide an additional scaffold for all learners to access the text.

I have posted two other lessons-- the previous one on summarizing the poem and a follow-up one on Whitman's use of extended metaphor.
