Students LOVE when they finally figure out the metaphor in this activity! It's great seeing that light bulb go off! Use this activity with small groups or an an individual assignment.
This activity is a worksheet that helps reinforce the ideas of meter, rhyme scheme, symbolism, extended metaphor, and allusion using Walt Whitman's famous poem "O Captain, My Captain!"
Students need to have a basic understanding of metaphor, allusion, and how to mark meter in order to complete this.
For struggling students, point out the years Whitman was alive and ask them what historical background knowledge they have of that time period. For further support, consider providing the allusion (for the final question) of "for you the bugle trills".
