This product is a six handout, ready to print, that helps teach "O Captain! My Captain!" by Walt Whitman. I use this lesson with my seventh graders, but it can be challenging for some of my struggling students. So, I think it could be used into high school. But, I love this poem and it corresponds with the social studies curriculum, so I have is modified enough that the students can appreciate it.
The first page is 5 vocabulary words from the poem defined and then the students are asked the complete synonyms for each word.
The second page is the poem in its entirety with arrows going to the margin so the students can write the definitions of the vocabulary words.
The third page is the poem again, but this time the arrows are pointing to poetic elements for the students to label in the margins.
Then there are seven higher level questions about the poem. In my class, I have these questions on task cards and I have them move about the classroom to answer them. But, I have done this where students work on them together as a group. Or, I have completed these in a jigsaw manner where different groups are assigned a questions and present their answer to the class.
The seventh page is a ticket out the door for immediate assessment.
Included is a key to the entire handout. (although some responses have answers that will vary). This takes one class period. I hope you can find it useful.
