This product has 20 onset consonant 10 blending boards for rimes for the following closed syllable exceptions:
These rimes are exceptions because the vowels do not make a short sound as they should in a closed syllable. Students need to practice building and reading these words separately so they can recognize the long vowel sounds formed in closed syllable exceptions.
READY TO USE:
I have found that using the blending boards for onsets and rimes provides much more practice in blending and reading a-typical CVC words.
To use the boards, cut them apart and organize them into two stacks:
1) beginning consonants;
2) rimes (closed syllable exceptions)
Place the cards face-up for the student to see. The student reads the C-V-C exception word shown with the consent and blending board. As the student blends the sounds and reads a word removes one card from either stack, changing the word. The student repeats the blending/reading exercise as the tutor continues to remove one card/board at a time, from only one stack at a time, creating a new word each time a card/board changes. The purpose of the drill is to build rapid decoding skills and provide a solid foundation for teaching closed syllables.
