Product Description
Reading by Word Pattern

Build your Jewel Case: what O-G tutors refer to as their box of word cards used for tutoring. With this bundle, you'll add 165 word cards to your resource of words to read for tutoring!

All of the word cards in this product are two-syllable words that follow a pattern based on a particular combination and placement of syllable types. The difference in this product and my other word packages for reading and dividing: these words are on a single strip of paper, with only 5 words per page. There is plenty of room to mark the vowels and consonants and label the syllables. Also, this mega-word pack contains multiple word patterns; my other word products provide only compound words, rabbit words, and cupcake words.

Orton-Gillingham tutor manuals name a few of these word patterns, RABBIT, TIGER, and CAMEL words, based on three patterns of syllable division:

WORD PATTERN SYLLABLE DIVISION
RABBIT Words: Rule 1: VC/CV
TIGER Words: Rule 2: V/CV
CAMEL Words: Rule 3: VC/V

Syllable Division Rule 1 applies most often: as in ten/nis, mun/dane, bub/ble, sil/ly, but these words have less in common and much more of a difference when we look at syllable types. The words are constructed of closed, Silent E, C+le, and open syllables, in the beginning and/or the ending of the words. As an Orton-Gillingham tutor, I believe we must teach our students that

syllable types show us a pattern,
and the patterns helps us read the word!

In my instruction as a tutor, I have specialized the way I teach decoding for multi-syllable words. I created names for specific word patterns, based not only on the rule for syllable division (such as, VC/CV), but on the construction of the word by syllable types. I teach these word patterns to my students, and the word patterns have proven to be very helpful for my students as they learn to decode multi-syllable words. Below is a list of my word pattern names and syllable construction:

WORD PATTERN SYLLABLE COMBINATION SYLLABLE DIVISION
RABBIT Word Closed/Closed VC/CV
CUPCAKE Word Closed/Silent E VC/CV
BONUS Word Open/Closed V/CV
CANINE Word Open/Silent E V/CV
FUNNY Word Closed/Open (ending y) VC/CV
CRAZY Word Open/Open (ending y) V/CV
SPY Word (1-syllable) Open (y)

CONTENTS of this product includes:
• 35 RABBIT words
• 35 CUPCAKE words
• 25 BONUS words
• 25 CANINE words
• 20 FUNNY words
• 15 CRAZY words
• 10 SPY words

I use these words during the words-to-read and words-to-divide portion of a 1-hour Orton-Gillingham lesson, and I have also used them as a syllable sort activity. In the product the words are provided on smaller strips of paper, with multiple pages per sheet of paper. I cut the small-sized words into single word pieces and mix them up in a bucket. An individual student can sort the words by patterns using the blue words as the categories for sorting. I have also used these words for a larger group of students. Each student draws a word out of the bucket, and he/she must mark and label the word fully, including the syllable types, division rule, and word pattern. Students present each word to the class, walking them through the process of syllabication, reading the word, and taping it on the chart in the correct category of word pattern. I keep an anchor chart of my categories of words; I have provided my key words in blue for you to use as categories.
