PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This resource product contains word cards for reading and dividing two-syllable real and nonsense RABBIT words. The cards are designed to be used during the New Words to Read, Reading Drill, or Syllabication Procedure of an Orton-Gillingham reading lesson. In foundational O-G instructional manuals, words that follow the pattern of two closed syllables joined into one word are called RABBIT words. RABBIT words are the simplest multi-syllable word a student begins to read.

As a tutor gains experience, she will need more and more word cards to provide during a lesson for reading and dividing. In foundational Orton-Gillingham manuals, a tutor’s vast resource of word cards is referred to as her “jewel box.” The jewel box is the tutor’s reserve of words written or typed on cards that are ready to use in any O-G lesson with a single student or a group of students. A tutor may choose to purchase a commercial set of cards, and some commercial collections have different colored word cards, making the colorful word cards seem like a collection of jewels.

I support the research conclusion that a dyslexic reader needs exposure to reading black ink on white paper. I provide all words for reading on 3x5 or 4x6 white index cards written in Sharpie marker. I have12 file boxes, each 12” deep, full of handwritten words on index cards, that I have collected for the last few years as a teacher in the public school and as a private tutor.

Since my handwriting is not as neat as most elementary school teachers, I have started typing my word cards, printing and cutting them, and laminating the word cards for durability. If you plan to teach or tutor using the O-G methodology of fast-paced reading drills that teach rapid decoding, encourage automaticity, and build fluency as a reader, you will need to create a system for creating and collecting word cards for repeated use.

In my O-G products, lessons #1-7, I have provided many, many word cards that can be used in later lessons if stored and saved for future use.

In this product, there are 80 words written in syllable parts and as whole words on 160 word cards. It’s a great start for an O-G tutor’s jewel case!

TO USE THE WORD CARDS AS A MEMORY OR CONCENTRATION GAME:
Print 2 set of the word cards, and arrange the cards face down in a grid pattern. Students draw cards to find a matching pair. When a match is found, the student must read the word correctly to win the match.
