This resource product contains 30 word cards for reading and dividing advanced three-, four-, and five-syllable words with -tion endings. In Orton-Gillingham methodology, word patterns are a key component of instruction. This set of word cards contains advanced nouns and verbs. The verbs are the base words, and the nouns are the words formed by adding -tion to the base verb.
The cards are designed specifically for the Reading Drill of a lesson that follows the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading. The word cards and syllable cards provided in this product can be used for building words and reading words during the Reading Drill of a lesson, or as a Memory Match Game in a literacy center. In either of these formats, the word/syllable cards will
• teach efficient decoding,
• encourage reading fluency,
• develop rapid, automatic naming, &;
• provide opportunity for skill mastery.
The 75 syllable cards can be sorted and blended together to build multi-syllable words ending in -tion. By building words with syllables, students find patterns in the words formed by adding -tion to a verb. For instance, the syllable that precedes the word ending of -tion is an open syllable with a long vowel sound:
plan - TA -- tion
star -- VA -- tion
quo -- TA -- tion
I have included instructions for printing the syllable cards on card stock colors which differ by the depth of the color/hue and ranges in shades of darkest to lightest. Beginning syllables are printed on the deepest color, the middle syllables on a lighter color, the open syllable on the lightest color, and the word ending -tion is printed on white card stock.
TO USE THE WORD CARDS AS A MEMORY OR CONCENTRATION GAME:
Print a set of the word cards, verbs and nouns, on a single color of card stock and cut them out. Arrange the cards face down in a grid pattern. Students draw cards to find a matching pair of a verb and the noun formed by adding -tion to the verb. When a match is found, the student must read both words correctly to win the match.
