There are five Of Mice and Men themed escape room (trivia) challenges included in this file. The puzzles and challenges are a fun way to assess reading comprehension, which cover a variety of different elements including: character analysis, vocabulary, themes and symbols, quote identification and a brief review of the author, John Steinbeck.
How to use this with your students: (several, flexible options)
• One activity a day, for five days
• One activity a day, throughout the length of the novel study unit
• As a complete, end-of-unit review activity (over several, continuous class periods)
• As bonus work for students who finish their reading early
• As a homework activity to assess reading comprehension
Each activity can be completed individually or in conjunction with one another, depending on the time available in your planning. The challenges could be used as individual, pair or small group activities. A detailed and thorough teacher instruction page has been included, which provides differentiated instructions and ideas for each of the five challenges included.
Note: Aside from the materials that you would already have in your classroom (pencils, pens, scissors and colored pencils or crayons), no additional supplies are needed! These escape room-style games were created as a print-and-go resource, so no extra prep has to be done on your part.
Help! The Boss misplaced his key to the bunkhouse and the ranch workers are locked in. However, before they can be freed from the bunkhouse with the hidden spare key, you will have to successfully complete a series of tasks and challenges.
Challenge #1: The Life and Times of John Steinbeck
In order to successfully complete this challenge, students will have to answer a series of multiple choice questions about the life and times of John Steinbeck, then work together to solve the lock code.
Challenge #2: Themes and Symbols Word Maze and Word Search
In order to successfully complete this challenge, students will have to sharpen their pencil (and eyes!) and pay attention to the letters within the maze. In this activity, they will collect letters that will spell out a word. This word will lead them to the end of the maze. In addition, they will have to search to find hidden themes and symbols, including a hidden, mystery word.
Challenge #3: Encrypted Message
Using the cryptogram codes provided, students will work together to decode various terms and definitions in three separate activities from various vocabulary words found throughout the novella. Then, they will attempt to unscramble all of the shaded letter boxes from the answers, which will provide them with a hidden word and message.
Challenge #4: Find the Magic Number
In order to successfully complete this challenge, students will have to match up the characters (from the alphabet column) to the traits and quotes column that best match the characters. If their answers are all correct, the numbers in each column and row will add up to the exact same number.
Challenge #5: Lennie's Suitcase Race
In order to successfully complete this challenge, students will have to correctly answer questions after reading the entire novella, Of Mice and Men. In this activity, they will ‘race’ to fill Lennie’s suitcase with a variety of items significant to the novella, based on their answers on task cards provided.
