OPINION WRITING/PERSUASIVE WRITING: STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS: PRINT-N-GO SHEETS
This writing unit will help you scaffold the structural components of an opinion essay and facilitate your students to write persuasively on given topics. Separate file featuring British English spellings included.

There are four lessons that will scaffold writing at every stage of the opinion essay on a given topic. Each lesson features a booklet cover. All the individual lessons can also be combined into one whole booklet with a general cover. Once students are familiar with the style and structure of an opinion essay, you can provide them with other writing topics. Blank writing sheets included.

→ ABOUT MINI LESSONS:
LESSON 1: DECONSTRUCTING STRUCTURE
20 questions that target the key components in terms of structure, language, and vocabulary of sample essay. The questions comprise of both multiple-choice and written response. Answer Sheets and Teacher Reference Sheet included. Have students refer to booklet.

LESSON 2: DECONSTRUCTING THE INTRODUCTION: HOOK, OPINION, THESIS
Focus on two major hooks: strong statement, hypothetical question. Students will write their own hooks, opinions and thesis statements on given topics based on sample.

LESSON 3: DECONSTRUCTING THE BODY: TOPIC SENTENCE, DETAILS, CONCLUDING SENTENCE
A sample body paragraph is provided for students to color code the topic sentence, supporting details and the concluding sentence. A graphic organizer enables students to brainstorm their ideas of body paragraphs on a given topic. These ideas are then written out in succeeding organizers marked: first body paragraph, second body paragraph and third body paragraph. This is an opportunity for students to also make revisions and edit their work as they write.

LESSON 4: DECONSTRUCTING THE CONCLUSION
A sample concluding paragraph is provided for students to color code the parts of a conclusion: summary statement, brief restatement of three reasons given in body, and a call to action. Students will brainstorm their own concluding paragraph in a graphic organizer and write out a concluding paragraph on the given topic.

* Now students are familiar with the language, style and structure of an opinion piece of writing, they will be well-equipped to write on any given topic.

SUGGESTED USE:
I start the unit by having a discussion on what Opinion Writing is using the posters as a visual stimuli. Each lesson is then introduced one session at a time so as not to overload students with too much content information. There is also ample practice on the writing skill in focus in the organizers and lesson layout. I have students color code the sample text as each section of the essay structure is covered. Editing and revising take place when students are writing out their brainstormed ideas on the given organizers. They use the self and peer editing checklist at this time. Students will eventually type out a final copy once editing, revising, and conferencing has taken place.
