OPINION/PERSUASIVE/ARGUMENT WRITING INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK {COMMON CORE ALIGNED}

Teach your students the art of persuasion with this interactive unit. The key to writing a good opinion piece is to adhere to structure, maintain cohesion and develop style. The activities in this unit provide ample scaffolding to enable students to organize content-specific information and write persuasively on a given topic.

WHAT YOU WILL FIND

OPINION WRITING PART 1
1. A poster defining opinion writing.

2. Four posters featuring written samples of the four types of Introduction: a scene, a hypothetical question, a definition and a quotation. The parts of the Introduction are color coded; hook (blue), writer’s opinion (red), and thesis statement (green).

3. Three posters featuring three written samples of color coded body paragraphs.

4. One poster featuring a written sample of the color coded Conclusion paragraph.

5. Four flap Interactive student templates to practice writing the four types of Introduction on a given topic.

6. Choice of three flap Interactive template for students to practice writing any three types of Introduction.

7. Three (x2 flap) foldable and one (x3 flap) foldable to practice writing Body paragraphs and the Conclusion after teacher modeling.

** All posters are in color and can be used as a bulletin board display. A black line version is also available for students to color code the parts of the Introduction, Body and Conclusion and glue in their notebooks on the left side. The interactive student templates can be glued on the right.

OPINION WRITING PART II
Students will apply what they have learned about writing the Introduction, Body and Conclusion of an Opinion essay in part I. They will research information on four topics in this section and have the option to organize information on Interactive templates or activity sheets. Students will also self and peer edit and publish their final writing piece.

Topics in focus are:
* Video games do more harm than good.
* An I-pad is a great learning classroom tool.
* Sleep is important.
* Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

8. The twelve interactive templates in this section provide a scaffolding for students to adhere to the structure of an opinion essay in the above topics. The cover flaps are used to
brainstorm/record information in bullet points and these points are further elaborated in complete paragraphs under the cover flaps. Students will also be able to edit and peer edit their first and second draft.

9. Students have the option of writing out their final piece on lined sheets or publish by typing out their final draft.

10. Five color posters featuring opinion writing signal words that may be displayed on the Bulletin Board.

11. One black line poster featuring all signal words that students can refer to when writing. This can be pasted in students’ notebooks.

12. Suggested lesson overview and procedure for each writing activity included.

13. Assembly instructions of interactive templates supported with color photographs.

14. Flipbook to scaffold the structure of a Persuasive essay. Students may use the flipbook to write their first draft. Color and Blackline templates included.

15. Six Writing Topics Task Cards (color and blackline)

16. Teacher grading rubric to assess final published writing piece.

17. Student self and peer checklist included.

18. Table of Contents for easier navigation.

19. List of Common Core Writing Standards addressed in unit.

USEFULNESS:
I planned this unit for my students after seeing their general reluctance to write, more so when it came to writing a second draft. I must say that with the interactive activities in the unit, they were more motivated and turned out some really impressive work. Perhaps I could attribute this to the novelty of the instruction or better still the focus and structure that this unit provided.
