ENGAGING AND INTERACTIVE "GALLERY WALK"

APPLICABLE FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH CLASSES

READY-TO-PRINT HANDOUTS WITH WORKSHEETS

The OPTIC Strategy is an acronym used to analyze various forms of images, including illustrations, comic strips, photographs, paintings, advertisements, and graphics. This classroom lesson is a great introduction to units on visual literacy, art criticism, the graphic novel and more!

I prepare this lesson by printing six of the illustrations featured in the SlipTalk article referred to in the instructions of this resource, and placing them at different stations around the room. Although you can provide each student with their own copy of each illustration. I prefer the Gallery Walk as it saves paper and allows students the opportunity to move around the classroom and interact. I begin this lesson by handing out the accompanying worksheets and having students read aloud as we learn about the OPTIC acronym and go over the instructions for the lesson. The artwork in the provided example, Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory," is a great example to use to model the OPTIC Strategy. I give students a few minutes to offer their own response before guiding them towards an analysis that focusses on the parts of the artwork in relation to the title. You can find several examples of an analysis on this piece of art on the internet if you'd like to consult a secondary source.

After the allowing about 30 minutes for the gallery walk, I enjoy having my students pair and share their conclusions before prompting them to share with the class.
