Inspired by an Ipsos/Historica Canada poll released for International Women’s Day (2018), this resource introduces students to 15 notable Canadian women, each a ground-breaker in her field.
Women Included: Emily Carr, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Nellie McClung, Gabrielle Roy, Viola Desmond, Therese Casgrain, Rosemary Brown, Agnes McPhail, Emily Stowe, Mary Brant, Bertha Wilson, Daphne Odjig, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Kenojuak Ashevak, Bobbie Rosenfeld.
This resource was designed for and used in my own classroom. All of the activities work with the anchor text Canadians Don’t Know Much About Canadian Women, which is written at a grade 10+ reading level.
This package includes the following items:
Original text Canadians Don’t Know Much About Canadian Women
Venn Diagram Template
Multiple Choice and Open Response (short answer) Questions
I recommend starting with a detailed reading of the anchor text, using a text coding strategy (there are several available online and through TpT). The reading provides a good launch point for classroom discussion and research. Students then complete a series of multiple choice and short answer questions.
