Inspired by questions asked by my own students, this series of literacy activities was designed for and used in my own classroom. All of the activities in the series work with the anchor text O Canada is Gender Neutral Again, which is written at a grade 8-9 reading level. The text focuses on the history of the Canadian national anthem, including the 2018 update.
This activity works well as practice for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) and as part of the Ontario Literacy Course (OLC, OLC4O).
This package includes the following items:
O Canada is Gender Neutral Again anchor text
Multiple Choice and Open Response (short answer) questions
I recommend starting with the KWL chart, then a detailed reading of the anchor text, using a text coding strategy (there are several available online and through TpT). The reading provides a good launch point for classroom discussion and research. Students then complete a series of multiple choice and short answer questions to check for understanding and and the ability to make connections to a text.
The estimated duration is 2 days, assuming class discussion occurs.
