    CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

    OTHELLO--CHARACTER’S SMART PHONE

This is a creative assignment I designed to evaluate students' understanding of the characters.

The directions for the activity are as follows:

--Imagine that your character exists in our society.

--Imagine a phone homepage that displays his or her apps.

--Choose apps from the following options, and then complete the

illustration/discussion component for each. (Brief description= 150-225 words).

---You may be comical but be sure to accurately represent your character’s traits.

---You will be evaluated on creativity and evidence of your understanding of the plot
    and character.

I provide a blank cell phone where students draw or paste a background.

They must then choose options under categories that include:

    ---Entertainment (Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube)

---Social connections (Facebook, Instagram, and match.com)

    ---Shopping on Amazon

    ---Legitimate news

    ---Self-indulgence (selfies, bitmoji, ringtones, games).

Students discuss why their character would have accessed or posted various items.

OTHELLO--ONE PAGER FOR ILLUSTRATION OF THEME, CHARACTERIZATION, LOVE AND UNIVERSALITY

Students love this simple, creative way to express their understanding of universal themes, characters, and LOVE in OTHELLO.

Students receive a template on which they write a theme from the novel and doodle or draw illustrations or symbols that depict the theme.

I provide spaces in which they provide a quote with citation that they’ve chosen to represent the following characters:

    OTHELLO

    IAGO

    DESDEMONA

    CASSIO

    EMILIA

    BIANCA

They include an illustrated depiction of the character in the block as well.

Another space prompts kids to write a quote that illustrates GENUINE LOVE in the novel. Then they must provide a graphic to illustrate love in the block.

Finally, a block where students depict how the novel relates to their own world.

I provide clear directions for the activity with the template.

    I’ve included a scoring rubric.

I’ve also included a completed sample.

    ANALYTICAL AND FORMAL ASSESSMENTS

    OTHELLO QUOTES AND QUESTIONS

This activity is three pages with twelve excerpts from the play, Othello, and corresponding questions to prompt students to discuss
plot and characterization in the play.

Instructions direct students to respond to questions in paragraph form and to expand discussion beyond the provided quotes; be thorough and consider the entire plot and all of the characters to develop the discussion.

I use this activity after students finish reading the play.

The activity's quotes span the entire play, so it could also be used as a final test or as a class discussion after studying or viewing the play.

OTHELLO-CREATIVE AND ANALYTICAL PROMPTS FOR EACH ACT

This resource is an effective way to assess students’ recall, comprehension, and analysis of Othello.

Students have opportunities to enhance their confidence in writing through differentiated activities and choices.

This resource is divided by act.

Act 1: This activity offers students four prompts from which to choose to write an analytical essay including cited quotes from the play.

Act 2: The creative prompt for Act 2 has students write a journal for Iago, revealing his thoughts about his revenge plan and who he will implicate. Emphasis is on characterization.

Act 3: This prompt for Act 3 guides students through an analytical discussion of Iago’s tactics and the unwitting contributions of other characters to their own downfall.

Act 4: The Act 4 activity prompts students to try their hand at writing dialogue. There are three choices.

Act 5: This activity is a personal essay. Three choices are offered and students express their opinion on the characters and events of the play, then relate to modern day.

Each activity includes instructions or pointers.

There is a writing checklist/rubric for each activity.

    OTHELLO FINAL TEST

This resource is an effective way to assess students’ recall, comprehension, and analysis of Othello.

There are 40 multiple choice questions each with answer four choices.

    There are 50 well-constructed True/False questions.

These questions are sequential, paralleling the play’s plot.

The test ends with 10 quotes requiring speaker identification.

The test is cleanly formatted. I use a clear font (Calibri 11)

Directions are included for each section of the test. Students are required to use capital letters and the complete words True or False.

I include an answer sheet to make grading easier.

    Complete answer key is included.
