I created this for my class as a way for the students to (by the end of the unit) be able to see the progression of plot and themes through the development of the characters. For each scene within each act they must describe the character and give 2 pieces of textual evidence to support their claims.
This becomes very interesting when some students believe Iago to be clever and manipulative while others deem him simple and opportunistic. The same goes for the other characters! I found its a wonderful way to spark conversation within the class and to get their minds turning on the greater themes of such a classic play!
This activity also allows for a gradual release of responsibility for students, for they must come up with their own opinions and support them. This comes in handy when nearing the literacy test!
I advise this be used in an academic style english class and accompanied with a showing of the play and/or a reading of the play aloud. :)
