OW – OW Diphthong – Leap Phonics Package
This phonics intervention package targets the OW diphthong pattern. With a collection of multisensory activities, this phonics resource is compatible with an Orton Gillingham approach to teaching reading. It is designed for teaching in individual, group, or whole class English language arts settings.
Read Aloud Passage
It includes a read aloud passage where students use their phonological awareness to detect the targeted OW diphthong sound.
Brainstorming and Keyword
Activities also include prompts for brainstorming other words with the OW diphthong sound and to select a mnemonic device or visual to increase their phonological memory of the sound.
There is a guided reading section of word lists that teachers can use to model and scaffold decoding words with the OW diphthong sound.
OW Phonological Awareness Tasks
As well, teachers are provided with scripts for phonological awareness tasks including manipulation and substitution of sounds and phonological memory.
To avoid automatic recognition of known words, a pseudo-word activity challenges students to read and discriminate between real and nonsense OW diphthong words.
An OW diphthong spelling list is provided where students are prompted to visualize the spelling of common OW words to help with recall. One focus word, down, is used in a repeated spelling activity to increase recall of this keyword. As well, a targeted sound building activity focuses on 6 OW diphthong words: brown, frown, town, down, how, and towel.
Multisyllabic Word List
In order to challenge students to apply word attack or decoding strategies, a multisyllabic OW diphthong word list is provided.
Visual Spatial Relations
An OW diphthong word shape activity asks students to match the visual shape of the word to the outline, increasing their spelling recall and recognition speed.
OW Reading Comprehension
In order to ensure students are attending to understand what they are reading, OW diphthong descriptive sentences are provided with the prompts for students to draw pictures of each.
To connect student's knowledge of letter-sound correspondence, one activity asks them to brainstorm other ways that they can represent the OW diphthong. Comprehensive answers are provided!
Reading studies continuously support repeated reading as a powerful tool to increase students reading fluency. As a result, a reading passage is included for students to practice their OW diphthong reading fluency on their own and with the support of a teacher. In addition, "one-breath" word lists of OW words is provided for students to practice their recall speed of OW diphthong words.
A word search for OW diphthong words is included for students to work independently on to increase their visual discrimination skills.
To exercise students' form constancy skills, a matching activity of OW diphthong words in provided.
A matching game of OW diphthong words and synonyms is included to increase students' vocabulary knowledge.
A final reading game using the sequence format has students read from a large bank of OW diphthong words as they challenge a partner.
