This packet is designed to engage students in fun activities that support the learning of the /ow/ sound using the ow and ou spelling. Each item can be used as whole group , center, or individual work. Here is a short description of each item and ideas on how to use them:
Poster: (Page 3) You can use this poster to introduce the sound spelling and hang it in an area where the students can see it easily for a daily reminder.
OW/OU Sort (Pages4-8) This can be used as whole group, small group or individual center. Have the 2 header cards up top and have the student read each word and put it under the ou or ow picture based on the words spelling. When they are done you can have them complete the worksheet that goes with it. They must pick 6 words from each column to write in the recording sheet. This will help reinforce the sound and spelling of the sound.
/OW/ Game-(Pages 9-11) This is a visually stimulating game to get the kids excited about reading. I would recommend this for small group. Each student begins on Start. Decide who goes first. Have the student pick a card and read it. If they get it right they can roll a die and move that many spaces. If they get it wrong, move on to the next player.
**For differentiation I have included 2 sets of cards. The first set is of single words with the /ow/ sound for lower students to read. The second set is of phrases using mainly sight words and /ow/ words, this would be for your higher group. Or you can just cut out and mix both sets**
Practice Sheets- (Pages 12-13) These 2 sheets can be done whole group, small group or individually. They are worksheets to help reinforce the /ow/ sound. The first one (pg12) is a sheet where students read the words in the box and sort them by their spelling ow or ou. The second one (pg 13) is a Read, Write, Draw sheet where the student is given 2 sentences made f sight words and /ow/ words. They must read the sentence, copy the sentence then draw a picture of the sentence. This helps enforce the /ow/ sound and reading comprehension.
