PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

If you follow my TpT store or my blog
or follow me oninstagram
or pinterest,
you know that my speech room is completely OWL themed!

This product follow suit :) I use this in speech and language therapy sessions to informally assess or spot check my students’ informal communication and for everyone to get to know each other!

I often use it in the beginning of the school year to informally evaluate their “post summer” speech. It gives me an idea of where we are starting the school year with answering questions AND/OR carryover of articulation, pragmatic or fluency skills into spontaneous speech.
For my students, that is often a huge challenge.

Of course, you can also use it year round to address conversational skills/pragmatics like taking conversational turns, using appropriate eye contact, expressing agreement or disagreement approrpriately, practicing active listening, expressing opinions appropriately and so on.

It’s great for practicing fluency and articulation strategies in an unstructured way. Lots of my students forget to use their speech strategies when they start speaking casually or spontaneously like this. Activiites like this help address that- sometimes I even record them and play it back! They are often shocked! Then I encourage them to rate themselves or explain what they could have done better.

-56 conversation starter cards & 8 blank cards (in case you want to write your own) are included.

I often choose the ones that best suit my student or group of students. I typically put them in a bag or box for them to grab from, and I always take a turn, too, so that I can model good skills for them. Sometimes during my turn, I purposely use dysfluencies, artic errors, inappropriate words or vocabulary, weird gestures, incorrect grammar, etc., to see if they notice. I even ask for critique or recommendations which they are always happy to give! I love letting them have a turn being the therapist and telling me how I could have communicated more effectively.

There are a multitude of ways to use these cards. I hope you find them useful and fun!
