To understand how a president uses their inaugural address to set forth the problems, issues, and challenges which face the United States as they begin their term in office.
1-2 class periods
This activity begins by reading with the class two introductory paragraphs that give an overview of the process of installing a new or reelected president in office.
Next, six excerpts from Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural address are given on the lesson pages. Have the kids read Excerpt 1 and then explain in their own words what President Obama is saying. Space is provided for written answers of 40-60 words. Ask for one or two volunteers to read their answer.
Afterwards, assign Excerpts 2-6 and discuss student responses when all six have been completed.
Teacher Instructions included.
