The lesson starts out with the option of a demo. You can use anything for students to look at and observe. (Anything from ice melting to a fancy science toy.) The purpose is to hear students thinking as they talk with their tables/groups/partners. From there it moves into a general definition and practice distinguishing what is an observation and what is not. Next, it differentiates between a quantitative and qualitative observation. Students are given five photos to practice making observations. Last, it wraps up with a short homework assignment.
