I love Jennifer Serravallo's Reading Strategies book. I reference it often when deciding on mini lessons to teach during reading workshop. I know that purposeful explicit instruction is what will move readers. I also know that observing students will show me where to go next in whole group, small group, and 1 on 1 instruction.
I created an observational checklist to go along with my reading accuracy mini lessons. I use this checklist when conferencing with students or when working with students in small groups. The checklist shows me at a glance what reading behaviors are secure and what teaching points should be introduced next.
