This lesson plan was written to follow the first two lesson plans in my Ecosystems unit (please see my store, Classroom Corner, for these two additional lesson plans). However, it could stand alone or follow another lesson plan you already have. It also corresponds to McGraw-Hill Science but with a few minor alterations it could probably be used with any elementary science textbook. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the lesson.
During the lesson, students will:
*Review previously learned material about ecosystems
*Directly observe and record data about their own ecosystem
*Complete "Our Ecosystem" handout (included in the file)
*Answer and discuss questions about their observations
*Explore the website “Windows to the Universe: Biomes and Ecosystems.”
*Listen to a read-aloud about ecosystems (suggestions are provided in the lesson plan)
The lesson plan meets VA Standards of Learning and North Carolina Essential Standards for 4th grade. It could also be used in states with similar fourth grade standards.
