REVISED!! Ready to Print! Black and white only!
10 one-page nonfiction/informational paragraphs with simple graphics to help struggling readers focus.
This set focuses on reading comprehension and vocabulary in context on each page. Simple graphics and short text may help your readers focus on the content.
Revised: Due to a misnomer, I have changed the name lantern fish to angler fish, which is more accurate. There is some discrepancy and confusion on the name, since angler fish are bioluminescent as the lantern fish is. Some refer to the angler fish as a type of lantern fish. Long story short...the name has been changed. Information on the fish has also been revised!
These short reads are brief (science or language arts) informational paragraphs about ten ocean animals. The paragraphs are short and informative, so your students get a snapshot of these animals.
Graphic organizers have also been added to this set...one for each animal. This allows for a little differentiation, and another scaffold for writing.
They do not include all the information needed for a report, but will give your kids a start if they wish to pursue a little research on one or more of these animals.
These nonfiction snapshots are great for the struggling student who needs less complex text.
The follow up questions on each page focus on vocabulary and the skill of skimming and selecting two or more facts to paraphrase and rewrite complete sentences.
In each paragraph there is a contextual clue to help understand the bold vocabulary word. Students should be encouraged to write in complete sentences and define each vocabulary word in context.
A glossary is included to use as a preview of content words or for students to check their work.
Students can color in the marine animals as they finish their reading and writing.
If you have your students use these pages to form a booklet, include the glossary page. These pages can be used for independent center work, homework, fast finishers, starting a research project, or for supplementing a unit study on marine animals.
