This unit plan includes a student packet with options for completing 3 projects about the topic of the ocean.
Projects include creating a play, writing a story, writing a song or a rap, and creating a 3D project.
Each student will research three topics (an animal that lives in the ocean, a specific body of water and any topic that they chose that relates to the ocean). They will fill out organizers to identify details about each topic. They will also identify causes of pollution in the ocean and effects of pollution in the ocean.
The skills include summarizing, identifying author’s purpose, cause and effect, and description. The students have to orally summarize as well as explain how their text is organized and how setting impacts characters' actions.
You can use this to teach many of these skills in class and then students can work on the projects at home.
I usually have students complete one project a month with some being completed in class and some being done for homework. You can follow up with a school ocean day where students get to display their projects.
