In our ocean studies we explored
• Earth’s Systems (overview)
• The Hydrosphere (basic facts)
• Marine Habitats
• Water Form Words (bay, estuary, lagoon, fjord, etc.)
• Features of the Ocean Floor (trench, seamount, guyot, etc.)
• Ocean Navigation (early navigation with astrolabes & the constellations, modern SONAR)
• Ocean Currents (Surface & Deep Sea Currents)
• Ocean Life including:
o Special Body Features
o Fish Body Shape and Movement
o Biological Interactions: Mutualism and Commensalism in the Ocean
o Deep Sea Life – Bioluminescence, Anglerfish
• We also covered the ocean zones and different layers of the ocean and the creatures that dwell in these different zones.
The main packet consists of 65+ pages of materials, plus you’ll receive a separate file with the Layers of the Ocean activities (10 pages).
The Ocean Unit packet starts with an overview of the 4 main Earth Systems: atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere. Then it covers some basic information about the hydrosphere (ocean).
Marine Habitats: There are notebook pages, Montessori cards, and lapbook/interactive notebook pieces about the major marine habitats.
Water Form Words and Features of the Ocean Floor: There are Montessori cards that show examples of a bay, estuary, trench, seamount, etc. I’ve included the oceans, seas, straits pin map printable that my kids used to practice finding some of the main bodies of water in the world. You’ll find that at the very end of the Ocean Unit Packet.
Ocean Navigation: There is a worksheet about early navigation and directions for two hands-on activities for kids to learn to use early navigation tools. There is also a worksheet about sonar.
Salinity: There are two worksheets about ocean salinity around the world. There are directions for 4 hands-on activities for learning about salinity.
Ocean Currents: There is a worksheet about the ocean currents. There are a couple of hands-on activities we did to show how deep ocean currents work.
Moon and Tide: There is a printable tide model that kids can make. There are two printable pages that explain what causes tides.
Special Body Features: There are two worksheets for kids to identify some of the special body features used by organisms in the ocean – things like venomous dorsal fins, bioluminescence, arms and tentacles, etc.
Fish Shape and Body Movement: There is a worksheet about the six fish shapes – fusiform, sphere, etc.
Biological Interactions: There are several pages about mutualism and commensalism in the ocean.
Bioluminescence: There are two worksheets about bioluminescence (and the 5 reasons why creatures might have bioluminescence).
Anglerfish: There is one worksheet about anglerfish.
Ocean Animals and Their Groups: There are matching activity cards about ocean animals and what they are called when found in a group: example: clams—bed, dolphins—pod.
Ocean Zones and Layers of the Ocean Activities: There are sorting cards with animals that live in the different ocean zones. There are description cards about each of the layers. There is a cut-and-paste activity about where you’ll find certain creatures and features in the ocean – including coral reefs, the wreckage of the Titanic, deep sea creatures, the Mariana Trench. This activity is provided both in feet and in meters.
Again, remember there are 2 files to download. You’ll need to unzip the file you receive and download the two files:
1. Ocean Packet, (65+ pages) with the Oceans Seas Straits Pin Map Printable at the END of the packet.
2. Ocean Layers of the Ocean Activities (10 pages)
