The oceanography PowerPoint and bundle covers many components of the ocean but also covers ocean currents and how they affect climate and biomes.
The material begins with the composition of ocean water and the topography of the ocean floor. The topography includes the continental margin (shelf, slope and rise), abyssal plain, seamounts, guyots, trenches, mid-ocean ridges and rifts.
It continues with ocean life and life zones. Ocean life defines and gives examples of plankton, nekton and benthos organisms while the marine life zones include the intertidal, neritic (coastal) and open-ocean (euphotic, bathyal and abyssal) zones.
A large section is devoted to coral reefs, including the three types of reefs – fringing, barrier and atoll. It also discusses the biodiversity associated with coral reefs and what must be done to help protect them and the organisms that inhabit them.
Finally, tides are discussed. The differences between high and low tide, the influence of the sun and moon, and special neap and spring tides are show. A link to a tide video by Neil deGrasse Tyson is included.
The material goes on to discuss ocean currents and climate. The difference between weather and climate, the reasons for different climates, surface currents vs. deep currents and biomes are described in depth.
