October Morning Math / Math Review by Brad Johnston
This package includes 10 days worth of morning math review work for students in 1st grade. The notebook file contains 39 separate slides containing math activities aligned to PA Core and Common Core 1st grade math standards. In our building the slides are printed 2 slides per page and copied front to back providing the students with 4 separate activities that are completed as they enter the classroom. The class then reviews and sharing answers along with revising errors as a whole group with the classroom teacher as part of the morning meeting/routine. Our students have used morning math for 2 years and have demonstrated significant growth when measured on our district level PA Core math assessment.
Content in morning math is introduced and then reviewed frequently allowing students multiple opportunities to experience and ultimately master various math topics. Multiple times per week students are given an application/word problem. Our students are required not only to answer the question, but also to show their thinking. As a result our students can talk about what strategies they used to solve a problem and show evidence that supports their answer. Students are also permitted to respectfully share alternative approaches to solving the problem. The teacher may also ask if others solved the problem the same way helping students to build confidence.
I will be adding additional files for each month of the school year, please consider trying out this shortened version of my October Morning Math to see for yourself.
